Who are The
Substitutes again?
The Substitutes are
simply Melbourne's best '60s band and if you've seen us, you know it's
true. Our mission statement is :
NO STANDING, DANCING ONLY!
This Month's Action Photos

These stills were taken at the Nighthawk in July. This was our first gig with new bass player Paul Gadsby (see below).
Paul Gadsby – bass
Paul joined The Substitutes in July this year and he comes with an illustrious past, great experience, superb voice and a fierce driving bass style. His choice of a Rickenbacker bass guitar emulates that used by John Entwhistle of The Who – one of the most important influences on The Substitutes.
Paul grew up with ‘60s music and this played a part in inspiring him to become a professional musician, something that he has continued to be his entire life. Along the way he has played just about every style of rock music including extensive forays into the areas of country/bluegrass/folk music.
He first appeared on record in 1975 playing on the soundtrack of the cult movie ‘Pure Shit’ (about the heroin trade in Carlton with appearances by Helen Garner, Max Gillies and Jane Clifton amongst others). In 1976 he recorded the song "Weekend" as part of a short lived band with Stephen Cummings before forming the first version of Paul Kelly and The Dots in 1978. He has since played with Go Wild in French (1983), Miss Dorothy and His Fools in Love (1987), Colin Hay Band (1987) Dianna Kiss (1989 with Ross Hannaford), Royal T (1991), Uncle Bill (1999 with Gerry Hale) and up until recently with Hey Gringo (1993). He works with Wilbur Wilde, Fred Strauks and FJ Holden in backing Ross Wilson, Russell Morris, Joe Camilleri and Wendy Stapleton on an irregular basis as well as playing in Mick Pealing’s band.
L-R: Paul Gadsby, George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Stuart Sutcliffe. [We’re not sure of the authenticity of this part of Paul Gadsby’s musical CV...]

Special Thanks to Barbara

If you’ve been to one of our gigs, it’s likely that you’ve seen our great friend Barbara. She has been a kind and enthusiastic supporter of all Substitute related things and we collectively want to thank her for her support over the past three years. She loves to dance and she loves ‘60s music so long may that continue.
Elwood RSL is closing but “Live at the Park” is born!

As you may know, Elwood RSL will be shortly closing down for a year to accommodate extensive renovations. That means a very important music venue will temporarily vanish. Where will you go???
Wayne Gale (well known former manager and promoter of the Corner Hotel) has opened a new music venue called “Live at the Park”. It is physically located at the Caulfield Park Bowling Club on Balaclava Rd and will specialise in featuring the best of the ‘60s and ‘70s musicians playing today.
The Substitutes will be playing there on November 19, so please join us in supporting live music in Melbourne.
